Since I've been on Vox, I've had many kind and supportive comments from community members. I must confess, I haven't exactly been prolific when it comes to commenting on the music of others. I have left a few comments, but I'd like to do some more.
The problem is that I've become a little 'comment-shy' because of past experiences. I am a member of many different music websites, as I am sure many of you are, and these sites often allow, encourange, or even require members to make comments or create reviews of other users' music. Like this site, or this one, this other one, and finally, the one that inspired this post.
Garageband.com is a site that encourages peer review of music, and has a chart that reflects the reviews. The enter the 'contest', you must complete a certain number of reviews, or you can pay and jump the queue. This system has many problems, such as incomplete reviews, cut-and-paste reviews, malicious reviews and so on, but to their credit, Garageband has tried to set up the system in such a way that these things are weeded out.
Anyway, I have done loads of reviews on that site, and have had my songs reviewed as well. I tried to be honest and fair, as well as constructive with my reviews. One day I gave a review, and the person on the receiving end took offence. They wrote to me in a particularly nasty way. If there's any interest, I will post the actual review and return email. Needless to say, this put me off reviewing.
The questions are: Do you really want me to comment on your music? And be honest? What if I don't like it? Would you prefer I not post any comment? If you ask for opinions about your music, are you going to get upset if I deliver? Would you ever be able to be objective about my music from that point onwards?
