How would you improve your Vox SonyBMG experience?
I was thinking about the thousands of unsigned artists who have joined the SonyBMG community here on Vox, all of us hoping to further our careers, get heard, get noticed, get signed and be successful. Many of us have had direct contact with A&R people that we would not have otherwise had without this community. Some of us have made new fans, and many of us have made new friends. But is it all you hoped it would be?
I wanted to ask: if you could change something about how things work in this community, what would it be? More frequent postings by the label? More career advice? Song critiques? Direct contact with the chairman of the label? A 'how to get signed' guide? Details of the process the label goes through when considering a new artist?
The beauty of it is, we are able to make things change if enough of us want it. There are a number of people who will join this community and then forget about it. Some will be here for awhile and then grow tired of it. Others will complain about how it works, but do nothing. But we can mold this community into whatever we want to be. So I'm asking for suggestions - creating a virtual suggestion box - for the SonyBMG community. Maybe it isn't my place, but I'm doing it anyway. If you don't like it, feel free to post a comment below.
If you have a concern about how things are done in the SonyBMG community, or if there is a change you would like to see, or if you have an idea about how the community could be better run to the benefit of all members, please post it as a comment below. If there is some overlap, and some common concerns arise, or if there are particularly good suggestions, let's bring them to the attention of the label.
Comments
I definitely agree that how-to guides regarding getting signed and published would be very helpful.
Hopefully we get some more suggestions! Maybe if you blog about it, people will take notice :)
okey dokes .. i will post something on the a and r page redirecting them to here.... due to the amount of people joining i think things can get lost in space if you know what i mean.... i also would like a place where i can place people such as yourself and a few other artists that i talk to as i always have to search for you when i want to come talk..... bev x
Really we're trying to allow Vox to be somewhat flexible and allow people to use the player they want rather than mandating what method they use...
With any social networking site (and anything in general for that matter) you get out what you put in it. Beverley is somewhat happy because she's one of the most active bloggers within the A&R group. She leaves meaningful comments on other users' blogs and that makes people want to leave her meaningful comments/feedback as well.
What ISN'T helpful or attractive is when users leave spam comments. I've received many spam comments that tell me to go to an artist's blog to listen to their music but they haven't given me any reason to want to. They haven't introduced themselves to me. They haven't told me what they're about. Really the only thing their spam makes me want to do is either block them or report them. I can't express enough how important it is for users to drive traffic to their own content by being active themselves.! And again, it has to be meaningful activity!
Hope that helps.
Vox on.
So, from your comments, I have gleaned a few helpful hints:
1. Be active and involved;
2. Create compelling and useful content;
3. Introduce yourself and be a true community member;
4. Think less about yourself and what you want, and more about creating a good environment and experience for everyone.
Some of those tips may even help you get noticed by the record label.
Completely agree... I think this is going well overall. There's aLOT of activity but again the best way for an aspiring artist to get recognition within the Vox community is by meaningful activity! I'll definitely keep my eye on this post to se the other comments people leave.
Vox on!
freddy a lot of your suggestions have allready been sent, good on yer for doing it tho mate cos they need a little push everynow and then,
i ,love it when people spam me.
i love it when people send me there music, even if you (ian) think it is rubbish, get a life ain, they are off there arses and trying to get noticed, NOTICED!!!! youv got to much time your hands mate. what do yuo think this is all about! if these people are making music and you think it is rubbish, bugger of to a blog only site with no music or justt get on with it and accept this is gonna happen.
I love it when people send me stuff but dont say who or what they are, I just tell them to not be rude and ignorant, sorted. no big deal. they then nearly always send info etc. easy peasy.
what i dont like is bull, self rightous pap and pin point sight. that really gets up my nose.
anyway, good one freddy, you got my support.
p.s. I love it when people do soemthing new, poerty, music, story, etc etc.and mass post it so I get updated automatically. I have stopped putting people into my neighbourhood now because I cannot reply to everyone, now not replying to people in your neighbourhood is rude and un neighbourly.
bye.
p.s.
may I suggest that if a perosn has lots of music, put the kettle on, make a cup of tee/coffee/herbal and go thru each track. I do this and I do find the gems. and its nice and relaxing which eveyone craves anyway. cool.
I think all we're saying is be constructive. And a spam comment on one of my posts about shoes telling me to come listen to your music isn't seen as constructive (unless your song is about me liking shoes).
FINDING THE BEST SONGS ON A BLOG
The point about finding the best tracks could be solved by installing a player as suggested but another way might be too create other audio collections. EG An artist can create a collection with say 4 of their best songs which they might otherwise have put on a CD for Sony BMG and call it 'For the attention of A & R'. You can also put that collection in a blog too draw attention to it post it to relevant groups.
If you have more diverse material on your blog - just label it 'Experimental songs' 'Folk songs' whatever. That might help direct the right people to the right collection.
* Agree with Rachel about the spammers. They are only interested in you being interested in them. Far too full of themselves.
It raises a point though - some are just plain arrogant but others just may not have developed the skill or vocabulary to give contructive feedback because they may not have been in a situation where they have had to do that before. 'Cool / ace / class / shite' surffice in a general situation but not for something like this maybe. Many on this discussion are good at giving feedback but for those who are not, some guidelines on this may be useful!
I had to develop my own responses when I began teaching creative writing so here's a few suggestions to get the ball rolling, You may add to or disagree with them as you will. Maybe some useful guidelines on feedback could be drawn up from the discussion.
* A basic class rule was that if you said you liked or disliked something you had to also say why. Make at least one point about why you thought it was good or bad.
Apart from a few arrogant people maybe most new artists are sensitive and need to build confidence as well as having a need to be given constructive feedback. It's possible to give constructive criticism without destroying peoples confidence or generally discouraging them. This could be done by -
* Saying what you like about the song first (usually you can find at least one positive point!) and then mention anything you think could be improved or changed. That shows a bit of respect for the artist and doesn't destroy someone (and I think opposite approach has been well illustrated in the situation between Bev and Dave!).
*As Bev sang Everybody thinks they're an expert and know best. Maybe one way around this is to make your responses more personal and tenative. That shows clearly you are not setting yourself up as an expert but responding as person in a more constructive way. eg instead of 'the chorus is dreadful' perhaps 'for me, the chorus just didn't work, not sure but maybe you need a stronger hook, I don't know". That allows them to think about your point clearly without wasting energy hating you for the comment.
For those who want to be more constructive, a guidline sheet / post might break things down a bit into areas and what can be looked for / commented on. This might be very useful to new artists / songwriters - then comments can be more focussed on say - structure / sound quality / melody / harmony / vocals / recording quality / marketablility etc. That approach might open up discussion in a more useful way.
* Also thinking about the intention of the work helps. The artist might help that consideration by saying something about the intention or their percieved market for the work. Again comments can be more focussed then. eg if some one uploads what they hope is a comedy song and you are not laughing - it's useful for them to know that. If everyone else say they rolled about the floor laughing then the artist can conclude that it worked - if not - back to the drawing board or start writing serious stuff!
I think it's also important for us all to remember that not all the music on Vox is aimed at A & R and just because it's not, doesn't mean it's just a hobby. Some are maybe artists in the non commercial sense of the word also. The great thing about Vox is that it is so diverse and rich (not just for music) if you look through the groups and a great place for inspiration therefore.
Hope some of this at least is useful and pertinent to the discussion Freddy.
Possible Improvements within Vox.
1. More publicity for vox to the general public. I have told many people who love music about vox but never heard of it before.
2. Keep the music icon on the same page when pressing play so as to be still able to read the rest of the page.
3. Definitely improve the quality of the sound playback whilst on vox.
4. Have a single page for all new uploads of music from vox musicicians, no hunting around then.
5. Photographic page.
6. Poems muse page.
7. More spam control if needed. Its like standing at a zebra crossing waiting for the light to go green and all there is is waiting.
8. I ahve found some amazing music/poems/insights via spam.
9. I have found amazing vox sites with spam.
10. I have also found some amazing shoes via spam.
Most of the above have been posted to vox by me and others over the last two months.
Freddy I support your intentions 100%.
BEVERLEY
people dont listen to my music,
Dear me. Now that is a surprise bevereley. Foot in mouth. I not only write music and poetry I am also a published author. The book sells extrememly well and my commission and royalties goes to a very worthy cause. I also write music that is commissioned for other people.
On average I get about 350 emails each day about my music and that is just from one site. Many ,many people download my music Beverley because I allow it to be downloaded and I ask for no payment. Nearly all say they enjoyed, inspired, relaxed, excited by the music. Some say it is drivel and shite. I then ask why and most reply saying its just not for them. Cool.
Also my music is written form my heart to another heart, not millions of vox hearts, Vox is a tool to reach more hearts because the hearts that I want to hear my music do not just exist only on vox. Yet I have met some incredible people on vox with hearts as big as lions and as steadfast in thier convictions and deterermination. Vox is a very small cog but with some huge, bright, intelligent people within it.
your music sucks
please go onto each music icon on my vox, press enter and read the comments and personally reply and tell each person that commented that thier preference in music sucks. Also tell them that if they did download my music that it sucks. If my music sucks so do the people by your statement menas they suck too. I assure you, they do not suck in my eyes and are great people. Dont try to twist this now, just do it.
You havent heard me rant yet. Give me something to rant about and I will rant for a whole week, whilst researching what it is I am ranting about.
Get a life!.
I am still alive...I should be dead!...does that make you feel good, smart, clever telling me to get a life?, so I have got a life and a great one too. Filled with love, great kids, some incredible friends who tell me when I need to be told and who tell me to shut up too.
I have a life that is full and fullfilled but is not filled out of choice with the drivel of anysort.
Ian
if you think I am being nasty about you saying other peoples music is mostly rubbish then I'm afraid you are missing the point .
Rubbish belongs in a bin. Not a comment about someones music. I am not picking on you, just pointing out the effect/outcome of the comment.
I'll need awhile to go through all these comments.
hiya ian me old mate, I dont think its fighting to get noticed as such, I think it is having a page solely for the muisc to be displayed. a page with each name, title, then the muisc icon, then just press play. for me that would be great beciase then I dont get lost on vox, I have suggested this to vox some weeks back but had no reply.
you know, I like you ian, I think you are an honest and sincere guy. My sort of person, good on yer. Great comment and suggestion.
I notice Al Stravinsky has now done this (put his songs in designated collections with a pic and blogged the collections - Folk / Comedy song etc etc). Very effective and easy-find Al.
Two intelligent and popular Vox bloggers / muzos with a lot to give the community - will they make it up? - will Dave apologise for loosing his equanamity and swearing? - will Bev make a constructive comment on Dave's music or will the war drag on? Forget your TV soaps - it's all happening for real on Vox! This is 'Reality Vox' at it's very best!
Come on guys - you both have brought Voxers together and stimulated some interesting discussions - time to lay the laurel leaf - apologise and treat each other with respect again! Storms come and go and the sunshines again! Amen (or should that be Eamon!).
this is brilliant hobo..... i am seeing a production company in alicante on tuesday who want to do a documentary..... both dave and i are in spain..... who knows........ destiny.......
All you need now is IndieBoy who was previously in the firing line and you've got an all star cast!! Olay!
i wonder if it would be possible for vox to categorise our groups into areas that dont overlap, let me explain..... i host the group dumb blonde jokes..... having just posted three jokes ..... they take over my music page and i had two important blogs which i had wanted to stay at the top of the page..... i think it would be good if we could chose which blog to keep at the top of our page when people visit us........ or maybe there is a way already to do this that i dont know about.......
So yes there is a way - took me a while to figure it out - but here's what to do -
Open the post you want to stay on top or near the top.
Click edit post.
Scroll down to where it says SAVE and on the screen right is a little box that says 'Edit Date'.
Click Edit Date and you can change the month / day and the time so that it is later than the current top post.
Click save on the Edit Date when done
and then click the Save on the post and it should rise to the top.
You can alter the time on the subsequent posts that way too so they go below the top post.
Hope that is clear enough.
You can also maybe create a separate blog for the jokes - you just need a different e mail addy and password.
